A Bluetooth enabled ring that functions as a watch, timer and phone finder may not have proved much use to a sprightly hobbit on his travels, but what about yours?
The 'Smarty Ring' has surpassed its Kickstarter funding goal by over $260,000 to start production of their concept smart ring and bring it to the market by April 2014.
If the latest iterations of wearable tech are anything to go by, then the Smarty Ring is likely to be approached with caution; Samsung's galaxy gear device met with mixed reviews and tepid consumer engagement, coupled with a general lack of interest in smart watches it seems that wearable tech has been over valued and over anticipated by analysts and consumers alike.
However, can the latest smart device from India based developers Smarty Ring buck this trend?
The reasons for a lack of interest in smart watches are plentiful, but essentially boil down to the exorbitant price for a device that functions as nothing more than a notification screen for the phone sitting close by in a pocket or hand bag.
As a disruptive piece of technology, the Smarty Ring is likely to upset manufacturers of smart watches; at least for the time being, until they really start to show the kind of innovation that wearable tech demands.
The Smarty Ring though, is proving far more practical. The waterproof, stainless steel band will feature an LED screen that will connect to your phone via Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology, and at only four millimetres thick and 13 millimetres wide the device is far less conspicuous than a smart watch.
The site claims the average smartphone user checks their phone every six seconds, and promises to make that unnecessary, saving both time and the battery life of the smartphone.
The goal of the project was to create a high-tech gadget that would also double as "high-end fashion jewellery," said an email to CBC News from the team's elusive marketing director, Karthik, who did not provide his last name.
According to the Smarty Ring site, the tiny device will be capable of far more than being merely a portal to your phone. Features include:

- Make outgoing calls to preset numbers
- Alerts for Text and E-Mail messages
- Real time updates from Facebook, Twitter, Hangout & Skype
- Control your phone without touching it

In addition, if a user walks more than 30 feet from his phone, the ring will actually beep to alert him that he's left something behind.
All of these features can be managed via the Smarty Ring app, which will be available across multiple platforms in tandem with the ring's launch.
So is this really one ring to rule them all? Or should it be cast in to the fiery chasm?

It's an interesting device, Carr said, but it doesn't really do anything new. "The app drives the hardware," he said. "What's the killer application?"

I bought this little watch because it was inexpensive (plus I had a gift card) and I wanted to test the technology without paying $300 before I even knew if I'd like it or not. If you're looking to do the same thing then this is the smartwatch for you. Beware...there are a few frustrating issues though.

The watch doesn't stay tethered to my GS4 constantly so I periodically have to reset my Bluetooth connection throughout the day which is a pain. The software that you scan and download to your phone can be cumbersome to deal with as well. I'm not sure if this is only because I have a GS4 or because of something else, but when I access my phonebook via the watch to either make a call or send a text I have to manually type in the phone number or it doesn't work. It also doesn't show my contacts by name when I receive a call or a text so if I do not know the number by heart I have to look at my phone to see who it is. UPDATE - 1/13/14: Shortly after I wrote my original review I returned my Gear and decided to pursue other devices. This was just before the firmware update last December. I was frustrated with the limited notifications and battery life. So I decided to try the new Qualcomm Toq. I tried the Toq for about a week and returned it.
Pros:
- Excellent battery life (7 days)
- Always on Mirasol color display (great in sunlight)
- Robust notification capabilities
- Cool wireless charging case but micro-usb is still preferred.

Cons:
- You must cut the watch band for sizing - yikes!
- Clunky design - not as comfortable to wear as the gear.
- No voice note capability
- Battery located at the bottom of the watch strap.
- Confusing navigation
- Expensive $350

Then I decided to try the new Sony Smartwatch 2. I had this watch for three days and returned it too.

I read many bad reviews and was initially discouraged but decided to take a chance given the recent price cut. I was pleasantly surprised. With the new update, you can now see up to 5 recent alerts, there are 4 different clock screens to choose from. The most helpful feature after the update was to be able to see the calender on a full screen with much more details than previously. The watch also would give you alerts for receiving an email, the sender, and the subject. The weather app is also more detailed than I thought it would be.

Pros:
- almost all alerts that you set on your iphone would show up on your wrist with a vibration, so you'd never miss an alert.
- Full screen calender provides very helpful information on the go.

Review : FINALLY AFTER WAITING SEVERAL MONTHS...
I originally ordered Toq as soon as Qualcomm's website was open for pre-orders. When I read on Wednesday Amazon was actually shipping the TOQ I cancelled my order with Qualcomm. This was easy since they had not charged my card yet. The TOQ arrived on Thursday Dec 12 2013. Why did I wait for this watch for so long since it was first mentioned in a news release several months ago - the promise of wireless charging, three day battery, waterproof, readable screen in daylight, works with Android (I have a LG G2 ), ease of use, attractive watch (yes I already received complements), and Qualcomm's branding. Yes, as a support test I had called Qualcomm and immediately I was talking to an engineer.

So am I happy with my choice?. After a two days of using the TOQ there is much to like. All the items on my "want" list were satisfied. There was a concern with cutting the wristband to get a perfect fit. I didn't use the enclosed instructions but, instead, I watched a very short YouTube...

Review : To Pebble or Not to Pebble....Potential
Ordered the black Pebble in early Dec 13'. Order arrived within the prescribed time frame promised. It came packaged in a padded envelope and neatly boxed.

Construction: Light weight plastic with some metal (buckle and side charging pins). The screen is scratch resistant (according to the website literature). The screen is ~1-inch (corner to corner). The larger button on left above the charging pins is a 'back-button'. There are three buttons not shown on the right. Think of them as scroll up (top), select (middle button), and scroll down (bottom). The band is made of rubber and is very comfortable. Over all the watch is very light weight...I caught myself looking to make sure it was still on it is so light. The watch charges over a standard USB port. There is no literature on the specific type of AC charger to use, so i'd caution anyone in using this method to charge the watch as it may not match the charging requirements of the watch itself.

Review : I love my Pebble
This watch is great! I love being able to try different watch faces every day. There is an app so that I can even create my own watch face. So I did. It was easy to load it on an use it. I added it to the others on my Pebble.

I'm hard of hearing. Normally I need to have my phone on LOUD to hear it even with my hearing aids and sometimes I don't feel the vibrating alert on my phone. Other times I have my phone in the bedroom because I don't have it with me. Nevertheless, my Pebble will vibrate and tell me who is calling. Even 30 feet away. It is totally awesome. If I want to ignore the call I just click the button on the watch.

For those of you that don't like the Pebble because they think that it looks cheap. Prior to the Pebble, all of my watches (except the one that I use to work in the yard) were fancy $500+. I now wear my Pebble everywhere. I meet with executives, and often I'll show it to them and next thing they want to know what it costs and...

Battery life lasts (depending on use) anywhere from 2-5 days which is great for a device that is constantly bluetooth connected.

The small text box worried me at first, but the scrolling text is fantastic. It does not light up the whole watch face which is great if you just want to sneak and see who messaged you.

Speaker and mic on the device are fantastic as well, and I can easily hear phone conversations while driving on the highway (in a very loud Jeep wrangler).

The reconnect feature is awesome as well, if I forget to pick up my phone and walk into another room, the Martian just attempts to repair and does so automatically so I don't have to fumble around with my phone once I have re entered the bluetooth range.

Review : UPDATE: This is just the beginning
UPDATE - 1/13/14: Shortly after I wrote my original review I returned my Gear and decided to pursue other devices. This was just before the firmware update last December. I was frustrated with the limited notifications and battery life. So I decided to try the new Qualcomm Toq. I tried the Toq for about a week and returned it.
Pros:
- Excellent battery life (7 days)
- Always on Mirasol color display (great in sunlight)
- Robust notification capabilities
- Cool wireless charging case but micro-usb is still preferred.

Cons:
- You must cut the watch band for sizing - yikes!
- Clunky design - not as comfortable to wear as the gear.
- No voice note capability
- Battery located at the bottom of the watch strap.
- Confusing navigation
- Expensive $350

Then I decided to try the new Sony Smartwatch 2. I had this watch for three days and returned it too.

It took to long to get here and there is not enough instruction with it I can't get it to show the time without punching a button it does not show continuely. .
